Your website has a new audience - and it's not human.

At Durable, we’re not just building websites for people anymore. We're building them for machines, too.

AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini are crawling the web right now, reading business websites to answer questions for their users. When someone asks "who's the best plumber near me," the AI pulls from what it finds. The question is whether it can find you. Here’s what that looks like in the real world:

Durable customer, Marcus runs a plumbing business in Charlotte. Last Tuesday, someone's pipe burst at 9pm. They didn't Google it - they asked ChatGPT.

The AI recommended three plumbers. Marcus was one of them. His competitor, same city, same services, wasn't.

The difference? The AI could read Marcus's Durable site. It couldn't read the other one.

That's the new front door for local businesses. If your site is on Durable, your customers can walk right in.

That's what LLM-readiness means in practice. Here's what Durable builds into every site to make it happen.

LLMs.txt: A welcome mat for AI

Durable now creates an llms.txt file for every Durable website.

Allow us to get a little technical. Think of an LLMs.txt file as a cheat sheet you leave out for the AI before it reads your website. It's a simple, plain-text file that lives on your site and tells AI tools: here's who we are, here's what we do, and here's the most important stuff you should know about us.

Humans navigate websites visually - they scan, they click around, they look at photos. AI doesn't do any of that. It reads text, and it reads a lot of it fast. Without clear direction, it might miss the most important parts of your business entirely.

An LLMs.txt file cuts through the noise. It's a direct line to the AI that says: start here.

If you already have a Durable website: visit [yourdomain].com/llms.txt and you’ll see your LLMs.txt file and what it says about your business. You don’t need to do anything.

Markdown Content: Plain Language AI Actually Understands

Websites are built with a lot of code under the hood - animations, styling, layouts. Most of that is invisible to you, but it's also largely meaningless to AI. What AI cares about is clean, structured text.

Durable automatically generates a markdown version of your site's content. Markdown is essentially your website stripped down to its purest form - just the words, organized clearly, with no visual clutter getting in the way.

The result? AI tools can read your site the way it was meant to be read, understand your services, your location, your story - and use that to represent you accurately when someone asks about a business like yours.

Webpage Schema: Giving AI the Full Picture

Schema markup is the least glamorous of the three. It's also the most powerful.

Schema markup tells AI exactly what your business does - before it even reads your site. It answers the most important questions about your business in a format AI and search engines can read instantly. Things like:

  • What type of business are you? (Organization, local service, restaurant, etc.)
  • Where are you located?
  • How do people contact you?
  • What do you do?

Important to know: You won’t see the Schema markup on your website, it’s in the code behind the scenes, and is there for bots (like Google and AI crawlers) to reference whenever they visit your website.

Without schema, an AI has to infer a lot about your business from whatever text it happens to find. With schema, you're handing it a fact sheet. The difference in how accurately AI tools describe your business can be significant.

If you already have a Durable website: To see the schema on your website and how it is interpreted by bots, go to https://validator.schema.org/ -> Enter your website -> The right side of the screen will show the structured data present on your website.

A new front door for your business

The good news: if your site is on Durable, this is already handled for you. LLMs.txt, markdown content, and webpage schema are built in.

You don't need to understand the technical details, but know that any time you update any information on your site, it will automatically update for AI too.

The rules of online visibility are changing. Durable sites are built for what's next.
